African Child Foundation
Our Foundation works with youth and women groups in our communities
Most schools in rural areas do not have enough books and study materials for home and first additional language learners. Learners end up writing exams without knowing the full contents of the book and this poses a problem when applying for university because the entrance criteria for first additional language is 50% and home language is 60%. This is one of the many systemic issues that arrest the development of learners at grassroots level.
Our Solution
African Child Foundation adapts prescribed texts for Grade 12 for the stage in order to bring the texts to life for learners in historically disadvantaged areas. This accelerates understanding of the text, brings it to life, and facilitates one- on -one engagement with our audience of learners and teachers to create greater understanding and appreciation of the text. Our exposure to schools in rural areas also highlighted the fact that many of the learners come to school hungry because of debilitating economic conditions at home. When staging our pilot programme, we approached Sasko Sam to supply us with bread and condiments to ensure that learners were well nourished during our performances.
Target Market
Our target market is Grade 12 learners in rural and township schools in South Africa. Our pilot project was successfully rolled out in 2019 to 20 schools in the Limpopo province using director’s resources
